IELTS Preparation

One of the prerequisites of applying for Permanent Resident in Australia is to sit for an IELTS test, and so it is something that I've been busy preparing for. Only yesterday I managed to borrow a reference book which is for the purpose of exercising my English skills. So first step was to examine the quality of this reference book.

The instruction of the first test section was "to circle the appropriate answer". Simple. And the first question was

Mick is going out to
A. a swimming pool
B. get some take-away food
C. have something to eat.

Nix: This is tricky. I think B and C are fine.
Daniel: hmm... should be C.
Nix: Why?
Daniel: B sounds informal.
Nix: *sweat*. The answer is C, maybe you're right.

So far, this book seems to be of a quality one and my expectation of this IELTS difficulty level seems to have been elevated. Which means I really need to do more work / preparation to face this horrendous war. Next question!

Steve's girlfriend is
A. having a romantic night
B. eating spaghetti with her grandparents
C. at her grandparent's house.

Nix: What the hell is this...
Daniel: Er... either B or C.
Nix: What's wrong with A?
Daniel: *thinking...* Doesn't feel right.
Nix: Is it because A is an informal sentence again?
Daniel: *still thinking...* what's the answer?
Nix: C.
Daniel: I don't know, ask Jacky...
Nix: Okay...

As you can see, the second question really blew us away. All of a sudden I felt like my English language skill is of Mr. Mustaza Ahmad level (refer to my previous blog to see why). But as the saying goes 'every cloud has a silver lining'

Daniel: Hang on...
Nix: ??
Daniel: It's a listening test.
Nix: *sweat sweat sweat*!

Damn... My readers, please keep this to yourself.
